As soon as the film scoring had ended I set to work on a new piece for Brass Band Northwest. My intent was to write a simple march, something to help me get used to the instrumentation and balance requirements of the unique ensemble, but as is my wont it became a little more complex than originally intended. Nevertheless, it is still fairly basic, consisting of two tunes, the first presented as an American-style march, the second in a slower, more deliberate (pompous) British-style. The name, March Maligned, derives mostly from the fact that when originally written the middle of the piece contained a fairly long section in three. This didn't make for a very convincing march so I revised it, returning it to a two (or four) meter. There are still three measures in three so the term still applies, but the fact that this work does cross the boundaries between American and British styles can also be easily applied. This piece had it's premiere at the Northwest Brass Band Festival in Bellevue, Washington on January 31, 2009. Unfortunately, I was conducting and with only three rehearsals and my limited conducting experience it was a little rough around the edges, but it worked reasonably well. The first recording here is the sampled file from the Notion software. I've also embedded the concert performance as found on YouTube.
